Volcanoes Meet Social Media
Now that all the stories and videos are up, I ought to spill the beans on what I was up to in early July when the phone was ringing off the hook... hunting volcanoes! The hunt was successful, we found and skied 4 of 'em - Mt Shasta, Mt Hood, Mt Adams, and Mt Rainier. We were a pack of 8 skiers, making for a quality junkshow the whole way through. What does it have to do with social media? Well not alot, but it certainly came into play on our trip. Just from Twittering our pre-trip ideas and road trip statuses, we received all sorts of unsolicited ideas and feedback, and almost ended up with a few extra trip partners. To add to the adventure, we hadn't brought ANY maps. The mountain route finding was pretty straight forward, and we left the highway route finding to the iPhones. Too bad internet and/or reception are often unavailable, frequently leaving us up the creek without a paddle. Then came the iPHone save. As we descended Mt Rainier, delirious and without food (after our 2500 ft detour), Andre randomly decided to check his iPhone, and alas, there was reception, and a message! Two of our accomplices who had taken the day off ended up watching our whole debacle from a nearby tourist telescope, and had SMS'ed to say they were coming up to camp with stoves and food.
