Tourism Načiks / Tofino

Awakening the senses

Visit Tourism Tofino

Few places are more iconically representative of Canada’s rugged west coast than Načiks, also known as Tofino. Located at the northernmost tip of the Esowista Peninsula on Vancouver Island, the small town of Tofino and the surrounding area sees approximately 600,000 visitors a year. Its tourism is managed by Tourism Tofino .

VentureWeb was honoured to be selected from 82 agency proposals to work for a destination that we have a deep affinity for. As frequent visitors ourselves, we worked with Tourism Tofino to reimagine a website that is distinctly emotive and educational, one that translates the uniquely Tofino experience to a strong digital presence.

Highlights:

  • Centre Indigenous perspectives through storytelling, language, and visuals
  • Foster a deep connection to Tofino and the TT brand before visitors arrive
  • Distribute visitors across the peninsula and encourage responsible tourism
  • Communicate the full extent of Tofino’s unique cultural and ecological makeup

A deep connection to place

Tofino is a place synonymous with a feeling—one of deep reverence for its rugged beauty and Indigenous traditions, and the connections found in its close-knit community. The Tourism Tofino brand encapsulates this and VentureWeb was tasked with creating a digital experience that immerses users in the “Tofino feeling”. The website uses innovative UX design infused with stunning visuals from local photographers to deliver high-level inspiration at the start of the user journey.

Centring Indigenous perspectives

Načiks, Tofino, is on the traditional territory of the ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht) First Nation. Tourism Tofino in collaboration with VentureWeb, curated an inclusive website that spotlights Indigenous perspectives and inspires responsible tourism. Educational content strategy, Tla-o-qui-aht language inclusions, and the ability to filter for businesses based on their Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Ally membership status are just some of the components that we executed.

Storytelling research to inspire and educate

With Tofino’s extensive story-filled history, it was no easy task to audit, remove, and refresh hundreds of content pages across the Tourism Tofino site. Additionally, we co-authored 150 new content pages compiled through thorough research on the topics that make up Tofino’s rich cultural and ecological tapestry—from the area’s flora and fauna to its arts and culture, culinary delights, and surf and skate scene.

Just stepped out of a meeting with my board executive and had a chance to show them the site – they were so stoked! THANK YOU SO MUCH to both teams on this. I know it was huge and I appreciate every single one of you and the work you put in. You should all be super proud of this! I owe you all many beers."
